Merger and other forms of organizational alignment are time-tested strategies for nonprofits to increase mission impact, improve financial health and enhance long-term sustainability. During the current public health and economic crisis, merger is a timely and viable option for many organizations to consider.
Merger: A Strategy for Nonprofit Sustainability unpacks what nonprofit leaders needs to know about a range of options to restructure organizations. This session addresses how an organization can consider merger, common obstacles and success factors, costs, benefits and risks. The session also covers key elements of the merger process as well as legal and financial considerations. Drawing on hands-on experience, the presenters provide a holistic overview that will help participants prepare for bold discussions, and navigate opportunities and common pitfalls. You’ll complete the course knowing what you can do yourself and where you will need outside support.
This online course uses a case study, small-group discussion and dialogue throughout. The course is designed for CEOs, executive directors and board leaders. The content is relevant to mid-sized, large and small nonprofits in any field of work.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Name and describe several options for restructuring your organization.
- Explain the benefits, costs, risks, and obstacles to merging and how they may relate to your organization.
- Describe the merger process and where you would need professional assistance.
This is a course with about 30 minutes of reading and preparation in advance of the live session. You will receive a workbook with additional resources and six months of access of the recording for use within your organization.
